Abstract This report presents a framework of integrated transaction and session management to meet the requirements of applications based on group work. Transaction management is provided in order to guarantee data consistency and recovery from failures with the additional beneet of structuring complex applications as nested transactions. Visibility between users is achieved by allowing unnnished work to be transferred between users or by establishing a synchronous session. Within a session users can update shared objects in turns and be notiied of others' actions synchronously.

A Framework of Customizing Transactions in Persistent Object Management for Advanced Applications

In the new applications that support user cooperation using the power of distributed computers, users' processes in distributed hosts often share large data structures containing nested structure and pointers that often indicate persistent objects. Transactions usually manage concurrent accesses to shared persistent objects in such applications. Although various types of transaction schemes hav...

Emulating Cooperative Transactions upon Standard Database Systems

Complex database applications like CAD/CAM or CASE introduce the need for long duration and/or cooperative transactions. Unfortunately, commercial DBMSs generally support a flat transaction model without cooperation. While many studies have been conducted on the management of more powerful transaction models on top of existing DBMSs (e.g., workflow management), few attention has been paid on tr...

Cooperative applications require advanced transactional services that make the sharing and exchange of information as natural as possible while preserving a notion of consistency. Conventional transaction models that were based on the ACID properties do not meet the typical requirements of cooperative applications. The CoAct model [RKT95, WK96] is designed for supporting cooperative work in int...
